67: Reading Your Brain

Imagine that you had the technology to remotely scan a person’s brain and record the brainwave patterns as they went about their daily activities. Through brainwave analysis and feedback from the subject (either directly or through observation), it would be possible to put together an index that correlated specific brainwave patterns with specific mental activity so that eventually the person’s emotional states, for instance, could be read and understood. It would be possible to do this to a number of people and collect enough data to correlate similarities in their brainwave patterns and find the common denominators between people experiencing similar brain activity. You would then be able to read the brainwave patterns of any person and know their mental activity. Once this was achieved, it would then be possible to design a similar technology to beam specific patterns into a person’s head and cause them to have specific mental activity without them necessarily being the wiser that it originated externally. By refining the technology, you would eventually be able to read and transmit from a great distance. Miniaturization would allow signal relay modules small enough to be incorporated into cell phones and computers, which could then transmit signals to and from the device using the same method of transmission as the phone or computer normally uses. As long as it could be remotely determined that the phone or computer was in operation, even if the user were just looking through a phone’s menu system or typing on a computer keyboard, it would be close enough to the person so that a weak, beamed signal at that time would have its intended effect. With computer automation added into the process, a system could then be created to automate both the reading and writing of mental activity of individuals on a broad scale. Even if only emotional activity could be read and transmitted, you would still have a very powerful tool for monitoring and/or controlling people.

Emotions have much more power over our thoughts and actions than the ability to reason does. The natural causes of emotions are often quite subtle and we aren’t likely to question too deeply why we’ve been feeling more and more depressed for the last few weeks, or suddenly feeling sexual urges, or flying into rages over the slightest things. People will act differently depending on their emotional state and its intensity, and this can be factored into this mind-control system. The fact that we’re creatures of habit offers the ability to reprogram a person through their subconscious, using emotion as a motivator to reconstruct their auto-response patterns to given stimuli. A new response, once learned through repetition, will become automated. It would be Pavlov’s dog in human form.
